Education
Private schools are another educational option for your child. Private schools often combine religion with educational studies or provide a more rigorous or international approach to learning. There are many excellent private schools to choose from in the Denver metro area. However, due to the excellent education that the Denver Public Schools provide, few children enroll in private schools. Only 7 percent of all students attended private schools in the Denver metro area in 2009.

The Colorado Department of Education does not endorse or accredit private schools, nor do they provide a comprehensive database of Colorado private schools. Various organizations provide accreditation as well as resources for parents. The National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) lists 20 accredited schools in the Denver metro area. The Association of Colorado Independent Schools (ACIS) is a local affiliate of NAIS and offers resources and information for parents looking for the right private school. ACIS lists the 20 private schools in the Denver metro area.

COLLEGES, UNIVERSITIES AND ADULT EDUCATION
Colorado is ranked the third most highly educated state. After high school, many Colorado students go on to college, and many choose a college located in Denver. There are 11 public and private universities within the Denver metro as well as six community colleges and more than 300 vocational and technical schools. With so many choices, it’s no wonder Colorado is ranked so highly for advanced education.

PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES
—Colorado School of Mines
Founded in 1874, the Colorado School of Mines is a public research university devoted to engineering and applied science. It has the highest admissions standards of any public university in Colorado and among the highest of any public university in the United States. In addition to strong education and research programs in traditional fields of science and engineering, Mines is one of a very few institutions in the world having broad expertise in resource exploration, extraction, production and utilization. As such, Mines occupies a unique position among the world’s institutions of higher education. Mines offers all the advantages of a world-class research institution with a size that allows for personal attention. With a student body of about 5,400, Mines has modern research facilities including 43 specialized centers.

—Colorado State University
Located in Fort Collins, Colorado State University (CSU) is one of the nation’s leading research universities with world-class research in infectious disease, atmospheric science, clean energy technologies, environmental science and biomedical technology. It was founded in 1870 as the Colorado Agricultural College, six years before the Colorado Territory became a state. It is a land-grant institution and a Carnegie Doctoral/Research University-Extensive. CSU is the “university of choice” for Colorado residents—30 percent of all of Colorado’s science, mathematics, engineering and technology students pursue degrees at CSU. In addition to its excellent programs in those areas, CSU offers among the very best professional programs in the United States in veterinary medicine, occupational therapy, journalism, agriculture and construction management. CSU is ranked in the top tier of universities in U.S. News & World Report's rankings of “America’s Best Colleges and Universities,” and Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine named CSU one of the top public universities in the United States in terms of educational quality and affordability.

Founded in 2008 and recognized as its own institution, Colorado State University’s Global Campus is an online-only school offering bachelors and masters degrees in social sciences, business management, information technology and public leadership as well as specializations, such as criminology, finance and strategic communications.
