The 10-county Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), more commonly referred to as the Denver metro area, ranks as the 21st most populous in the country with an estimated 2013 population of 2,697,476, a 6-percent increase since 2010. More than half of all Colorado residents live in this MSA. Following is a look of the 10 counties that make up the MSA.

DENVER COUNTY—OVERVIEW
The second most populous county in Colorado, the consolidated City and County of Denver is the largest city and the capital of Colorado, and it is located in the South Platte River Valley on the western edge of the High Plains just east of the Rocky Mountains. Nicknamed the Mile-High City because of its official elevation measured at exactly one mile or 5,280 feet above sea level, Denver is one of the highest major cities in the United States and covers 153 square miles. The 2013 estimated population of Denver was 649,495, which ranks it as the 22nd most populous U.S. city. Denver’s climate is very sunny, averaging 300 days of sunshine a year. ]July is the warmest month of the year, with high temperatures averaging almost 90°F, but summers tend to range from mild to hot with occasional afternoon thunderstorms. December, the coldest month of the year, has an average high temperature of 44°F and average low of 18°F. Winters are mild with short periods of snow and longer periods of mild weather because pf chinook winds. The dry climate and the abundant sunshine make lower temperatures feel warmer than they do in more humid climates.

ADAMS COUNTY—OVERVIEW
Adams County is the fifth most populous of the 64 counties in Colorado and has seen a more than 25-percent increase since 2000. Adams County is named for Alva Adams, an early Colorado governor, and the county seat is Brighton. The county has a total area of 1,197 square miles that surrounds most of Denver International Airport, which is in the City and County of Denver. The average temperature of Adams County is 50.22°F, which is higher than the Colorado average temperature of 46.26°F. Adams County receives an average annual precipitation of 14.85 inches, slightly less than the Colorado average.

ARAPAHOE COUNTY—Overview
Arapahoe County is the third most populous county in Colorado. Called “Colorado’s First County” since its origins predate the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush, .Arapahoe County has its county seat in Littleton and has Aurora as its most populous city. Arapahoe County has 798.10 square miles of land area and 7.34 square miles of water area. The average temperature of Arapahoe County is 50.15°F, which is higher than the Colorado average temperature of 46.26°F. The county receives an average of 15.6 inches of precipitation per year and an average annual snowfall of 42.28 inches.
